The time I bought my sister a Filofax... and KEPT it!




I was convinced that I could change my sister's life by converting her to share my secret love-affair with Filofaxes. So I bought her one, but had trouble letting go ...


Like me, my sister is a virgo, and in many ways we are quite similar. She also has the same strange interest in pens and paper that I have, and we both used to keep diaries and scrap books as kids, Although being my younger sister, perhaps she was just being a bit of a copy-cat. 

If I could just get a Filofax into her hands though, I knew it would be contagious.

So I ordered her a beautiful bright red personal Chameleon Filofax. 

I was so excited. Was this just an excuse for me to buy more Filofax Goodies and not feel guilty? Probably. 

The thing is, when my sister's Filofax arrived, I had the pleasure of unwrapping it, and as soon as I had it in my hands – I felt oh-so-confused! 

How could I possibly part with this beautiful thing now that I had seen it?

It was so vibrant, and when I placed it on top of my A5 Aqua Chameleon Filofax I saw something very special indeed. The colour combination was exciting and delicious. There was no way that I could part with it.






As you can see below, that bright vibrant red follows you as you open the Filofax up, it's everywhere. 

Now then, I'm not normally a 'bright red' type of gal – that has always been my sister's thing, which is why I chose the red one for her. 

But I was beginning to think that maybe I could be...






And inside it came with these tutti-fruity coloured numbered tab dividers. 

I was jealous. I wanted them, end of story.







The only thing I could do was go straight back online and purchase another red Filofax for my sister and keep this one for myself. Yes, I was officially purchasing two of the same Filofax. My addiction and insanity was finally confirmed. But what's a girl to do?

I gave my sister the second Filofax last Christmas and she laughed when she opened it, but I had faith that it would soon seduce her, and it did. 

It's all about the personalisation, as you dedicated Filofax lovers know. 

She gradually gave in and made it her own, and then one day she called me up and made me the happiest sister on the planet ...

"Zara," She gasped with angst in her voice, "Zara, I can't find my Filofax! What am I going to do? I don't know what I'm doing tomorrow!"

That's my girl, I thought with a big smile on my face :)

Unboxing: My new Midori Traveler's Notebook arrives



When you fall in head over heels in love – nothing will stand in your way. No, nothing... Not even a fifty quid price tag! 


I discovered the Midori Traveler's Notebook months ago, and no matter how much I tried to push it to the back of my mind, I knew there would come a day when I would, loaded with guilt, dip my hand into my virtual pocket and part with fifty quid for this slice of leather, some elastic and an over-priced paper notebook refill. It was inevitable.

Last week I had enough of the self-torture. I'd justified it to myself in every way shape and form – for weeks! It was too late for any more consideration. I hit the purchase button ...






It arrived in a matter of days. 

I was so nervous in case it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I've spent many evenings ogling pictures online, and I knew it would arrive in brand spanking new condition, and that the leather would improve the more I use it because that is what attracts so many people to the Midori Traveler's Notebook. So I was preparing myself to initially be a bit disappointed at the newness.

I opened the package and I was very pleased with the simple cardboard container, I knew I'd put that to good use with it's cute elastic band. 

I was equally pleased with the thin canvas pouch that was revealed next when I opened the cardboard packaging up. I took the Journal out of the pouch and this is what it looked like ...






I was prepared for this. I knew about the natural animal fat that would be present on the leather, and I was actually quite relieved to see it, because it showed the product's authenticity. 

How exciting! 

It was very easy to wipe it off with a soft cloth, and the leather underneath was exquisitely... and I don't know what other word to use except... divine! It is velvet black and I am completely in love.

The Leather Journal cover came with one plain notebook insert, extra elastic, and a smell that reminds me of my dad who used to own a small leather factory. 

I felt immediately connected to the journal, and I have a feeling that my Filofaxes have some stiff competition!

You will be hearing a lot more about this little beauty, trust me.

Part 2 - Filofax setup – my 'notebook' section


Wecom to part 2 of my Filofax planner setup. Read Part 1 to find out how I have paired my Flex with my Filofax, and also how I created a useful planner dashboard. Next we'll look in detail at my notebook section ...


Why have a notebook section in your planner?


I'm a writer, and I think every writer must have a 'notebook' section in their Filofax or other everyday planner. It's a convenient place to jot down notes and thoughts throughout the day.

For me, it's important to make it a beautiful personalised and inspiring space in the planner, instead of just chucking in a wad of loose blank paper inserts. When I open my notebook section I consider it to be 'me-time' and so I find it a very enjoyable space in my planner.

You may like to use your notebook section as a personal journal to jot down thoughts that come to you throughout the day. Alternatively it might be more of a general commonplace notebook, in which you jot quotes and snippets of info to keep safe. 

I've personalised my Notebook section divider with some quotes that inspire me as a writer. Many of us love to express our personalities and interests int a Filofax or planner so that we feel at home and comfortable and want to spend lots of time in them.  I think the more your planner reflects who you are, the more you are likely to use it to its full potential.  


Create secret pockets in your planner!


You can see in the picture below that behind this divider tab I have taped some secret paper pockets to hide loose notes in.  


I love anything that's a little bit mysterious, and having secret spots to hide things that are a little bit more personal, like passwords or private poems and letters can be useful. 

When I was younger I used to have a fascination with things like keys, and secret compartments in furniture, or loose floorboards where I could keep a secret stash of trinkets.  Perhaps that's why I'm so attracted to Filofaxes with all of the pockets and sections.

pockets are really useful. If your Filofax is fairly simple and you don't have many pockets in the actual cover, you can get creative like I have. 


Here are some ideas:

  • Hole-punch envelopes to use as pockets in your planner
  • Tape pages together and leave the side open to slip notes into 
  • Make your own secretary pocket inserts out of your divider tabs
  • Create fold-out inserts with extra pockets for stickers and sticky notes

Write notes to yourself, fold them up and slip them into the secret pockets in your planner and then forget about them. It's always such a delight to discover something months down the line that you had completely forgotten about. A bit like burying a little tin of treasures and then digging it up years later.


My main notebook section


After the secret pockets in my planner I have a wad of lined and plain notepaper for my notebook section.  I write down my ideas and thoughts, and scribble all sorts of nonsense.

It's a place I often have to return to to declutter and top up with more paper.

 At the end of my notebook section I have a few permanent sheets for jotting down useful websites, which I mark with a pretty pink bookmark that I got from Paperchase for easy access.


I also use random paperclips, bookmarks and sometimes even hair grips to find certain sections in my planner. It's a kind of secret system that only I know how to use, which is useful for privacy. 

I don't really like the idea of a stranger being able to open up my planner and see a tab that says 'personal info' or 'contacts'. Why make it easy for people to access private content?

Part 1 - Filofax Setup - How I use my Flex with my Filofax and a Dashboard


To celebrate the beginning of a new year I have decided to move into a different filofax for a fresh start ... 


Sometimes a change is nice and refreshing. Plus, I've been dying to break in my new Personal Aston for a while now. It's the yummy chocolate-coloured one – Read about how I discovered it here.

The first thing I did was de-clutter. It is amazing the amount of junk you can accumulate within the pages of your everyday Filofax. 

I decided to remove every sheet I haven't looked at in months, which meant removing half the tabs too – I was brutal, and I only kept what was absolutely necessary.


Tips on how to minimalise and declutter your planner


  • Take absolutely everything out first – this will give you a nice blank canvas
  • Then go through with a fine-toothed comb – only returning essential inserts and things that bring you joy.

These two steps will help to make the task of decluttering your planner feel more thorough. Plus, it will leave you with a clearer idea of everything that your planner contains, the order of things and you'll end up feeling that little bit more connected to it – which will hopefully help you to use your planner more effectively!




Looking at my new set-up, you wouldn't know that I spent hours de-cluttering - it still looks pleasingly packed! We all love a nice fat Filofax, don't we?


                   


How I pair my Filofax with a Flex


I like to use my original Filofaxes and my Flex Filofaxes together (read more about that here!)  

So, I am currently using my personal Aston Filofax with my magenta slim Flex slipped into the inside pocket, so that the Flex flaps open when I open up my Aston.  

Why? Well, firstly because the colours look so yummy together – the magenta matches my pink pencil, and colour coordination and accessories make me happy. Also, adding the Flex to my Filofax gives me more options.

For example, I find it very convenient to slip in a Flex jot-pad and use the pockets in the Flex to store random bits and pieces. 

As you can see below, I have personalised my jot-pad with a newspaper cutting that says "Why Women Can't Resist a List" -  It sums me up perfectly.



I tend to use the jot-pad for 'rip-out, screw-up and chuck-away lists' - Such as want lists, shopping lists, to-do lists...  Which reminds me, I need to buy more jot-pads, they run out so quickly.  

They are very useful though, especially when kept at the front of my Filofax. I find I use my jot pad a lot more when it is at the front, rather than when it is at the back. I don't know why Filofax always designs jot pads to go at the back of their planners.

If you want to make use of all the pockets in the Flex, including all those card slots on the left-hand side, rather than slip the left-hand side of the Flex cover into the inside pocket of your Filofax, you can just keep the Flex stored at the back on the right-hand side of your Filofax, behind all your usual inserts.  I don't find that it slips out because the pen-loop sort of keeps it in place when the planner is open.


Use your flex as a portable sticker station


At the moment I buy specific stickers for my personal Filofax which is my everyday organiser, and specific stickers for my A5 which is my business organiser, but it would be ideal if I had a portable sticker station that I could transfer to whichever Filofax I am taking out with me – I think the Flex slimline is the perfect solution!

Because of all the pockets, there are plenty of places to slip stickers into. If you're feeling particularly creative you could even design some sort of envelope book system in which to store stickers in the Flex.

Then just transfer your Flex over to whichever Filofax you're using, and you'll have all of your stickers with you.


More creative uses for using the Flex with your Filofax


  • Store extra things – like stamps, sticky notes and receipts
  • Hold extra notepads to keep notes separate – a journal, poems, transferable calendar
  • Extra pen loops – with the added bonus of them being elastic for fatter pens!
  • Shopping lists – it's easier to hold the Flex than a bigger Filofax in the supermarket

The idea of using a Flex to accessorise your Filofax might seem a bit weird, but as you can see from my photos, the Filofax closes perfectly well with the Flex inside, so why not?

Moving on from the Flex ...

I've posted previously about how to create your own planner dashboard using card-slot inserts - but here I use a slightly different system.

I have a 'front sheet', which is a pretty patterned insert sandwiched between two pieces of acetate and clipped together using metal page markers.

I slide in a sticky note pad which is kept in pace using the metal bookmarks.  I can then use this to jot reminders or notes and move them into the areas of my organiser that they relate to.


Behind the 'front sheet' I can also slip loose notes into the book marks, or stick sticky notes on the acetate sheet opposite ...
It may not be how you would incorporate a dashboard, but it's working for me right now. I think that's the most important thing – personalising your planner so that it works for you.

Most of the satisfaction is in getting creative and discovering how your planner can function in a bespoke way. We all have different needs and different ways of doing things, and a personal planner is a great way to express yourself.

So I highly recommend reading blogs like mine for inspiration, collect ideas and then adapt and apply them to your own planner system.

Filofax review: my slim magenta Flex by Filofax



WARNING:  Lots of droolworthy pictures below...

I don't think you guys 'get' the Flex yet! I'm still surprised that Filofax addicts aren't raving more about the various perks of the Filofax Flex binders. So I thought I'd share my thoughts with this Filofax review of the slim Flex by Filofax. I have it in this pretty magenta colour.



This is an older post and sadly Filofax don't make the Flex anymore. But I hope you'll still enjoy the nostalgia of this post and others I've written about the Flex ...

How I use my slim Filofax Flex as a mobile phone cover 


I've already shown you how I use my A5 Black Flex as my Kindle cover. Now I'm going to show you how I use my slim magenta Flex with my smartphone.  

 (Note:  I do take pictures using my smartphone, so it's a tricky one as I can't take pictures of my smartphone being used with my Slim Flex, because I'm using the phone to take the pics... sorry.  There are some sexy pics of my Slim Flex further down though, so don't fret.)

I do a few casual shifts in a bar around the corner from where I live, and so I like to nip down the street with as little as possible holding me down – usually because I'm running late!  My slim Flex fits perfectly in my little handbag, and what's more, my smartphone fits perfectly in my Slim Flex!

When I get to work, my handbag goes into the office, but I like to keep my phone behind the bar, and it just feels safer slipped into the inside pocket of my Flex because it's not on display.

During a quiet moment I sometimes like to sit on a stool with my Flex open and my smartphone on one side of it, open on a cocktail app, with my notebook on the other side with my scribbled notes and diagrams of different cocktail recipes I am trying to learn.  It just makes sense!


Think outside of the box with your Flex Filofax 


You have to stop thinking about the Flex as a Filofax planner in the traditional sense, and start thinking outside of the box.

What else can a slim Flex hold?  Your passport, receipts, notes, cards...  the Flex isn't here to replace your Filofax, its here to compliment it!


Use your Flex alongside your Filofax


You can slip your slim Flex into pretty much any personal organiser. You can play around with colours too and accessorise your personal Filofax with a Flex.

For example:

  • Team an A5 Aqua Chameleon Filofax with a slim Flex in slate
  • A magenta slim Flex looks pretty cute slipped into my new chocolate personal Aston.  
  • I bet it would look even better slipped into an Orchid Aston with the pink stitching!  
  • Contrast a lighter shade of Filofax like the Mushroom Aston with a Black Flex.  (Sorry... I'm a little obsessed with Astons right now).

As you can see, the sizing of the Slim Flex is ideal for a personal Filofax.  This is my slim magenta Flex popped into my personal wine Holborn zipped Filofax.  

I love my new Holborn zipped because I can literally chuck anything I like in loose, and then zip it up to keep everything together.  That's why the Slim Flex works so well with it.  I don't have to fit it into any slots or pockets, it just sits there, like it is laying back on a sun-lounger!


How I use my slim Flex with my personal Holborn zipped Filofax

 
Wondering how I am using my Slim Flex with my Holborn?  Well, I just love the little bound Flex Notebooks!  You can get a lined one or a plain one and they're great for scribbling in.  I know you can use Filofax paper inserts for this, but there's just something about scribbling in a little bound notebook, making doodles, sketching, jotting things down...  

I am also experimenting with a new diary system whereby I want to start using a Flex bound diary insert as a way to permanently record important dates and things I have done and then use my Filofax more as a non-permanent planner, which is what it is really designed for.  

I have always found the non-permanent nature of Filofax inserts annoying as I never feel I can relax knowing all my info is there forever in proper chronological order.  

You can use your slim Flex to keep a small collection of mini-notebooks to compliment your own Filofax system.  You can fit 1 to 4 slim notebook inserts into these Flex binders after all!  

Or how about making it your sticker and post-it station?  Now that's a good one!

You might think the Slim flex will dominate in your Filofax, but it can quite neatly slip into the back and out of the way.  It doesn't even fall out when you open your Filofax up, because your Filofax inserts press the Flex against the back cover.





How I use my Filofax Flex with pocket, personal, and A5 Filofaxes 


With my pocket Guildford I used to slip an old stretchy hair-band over the back cover so that I could slip a thin notebook in the back and the hair-band would keep the notebook in place by its spine. 

Well, there's no reason why you can't do this with a personal-sized Filofax and a slim Flex binder!






It would provide extra card slots, notebooks, a jot-pad; not to mention those all-important slip in cardboard pen-loops.

Sometimes I use my slim Flex cardboard pen-loop on its own in my personal Aston - you can just slip it into the front or back pocket.






But don't stop at the personal size - swap your slim Flex over to your A5 Filofax!  If you are using your Flex as a sticker and post-it station, it's great because it can pop into your A5 Filofax even easier...






Don't you think the Aqua of my A5 Chameleon looks even more fun and girly when teamed with my slim magenta Flex?  Well I do!  Hee hee.






And last but not at all least...






Don't look so baffled!  Its fun, cute, and most importantly - it works...  

Besides, I like to mix up different sizes, it adds character to my super-system of organisation.

Filofax Vlog: my Holborn zipped Filofax is also my new clutch bag!



They both arrived this morning and I am absolutely smitten. Maybe I should think about joining a Filofax addicts anonymous group? I am developing quite a Filofax collection.

Aston Filofax and Holborn zipped - love at first sight


ASTON FILOFAX (Personal)


I saw and held an Aston Filofax today. As a Filofax addict, I should have known better ...


What happens when you can't decide between two gorgeous Filofaxes?  Well, if you're anything like me, you basically end up with two stunning new organisers, and a rather alarming dent in your virtual wallet.  I couldn't help myself.

I didn't purchase them both on a whim though.  No no... When you are deciding on your next Filofax, it is, of course, essential that you check every single review, blog post, and Youtube video.

I exhausted them all, and a week later I came to the conclusion that if I didn't purchase both of these stunning planners, there would always be that - what if...?

It all started when I was browsing the Filofaxes in Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road - Not because I was looking for a new Filofax, but because I couldn't resist. I never can.


The Aston Filofax 


I picked up this ordinary looking Aston Filofax and was immediately taken aback. It felt... right. Suddenly the rich dark chocolate colour was just so... me.

The leather was soft against my fingertips, and ever so slightly cushioned. The graining was so subtle, and the stitching - talk about elegant.

It fitted into my palm so comfortably that I had to have a private moment with the Aston right then and there, whilst standing in the middle of Paperchase, with the security guard looking on suspiciously as my eyes rolled back and my fingers fondled the merchandise.

When I opened the snap and looked down, I knew exactly what to expect - I held my breath, almost hoping it wouldn't be so... but it was. The Aston leather cover was totally flexible.  It bent right back onto itself like the cover of an old paperback book - heart-wrenching perfection.

Now then, in the reviews, the Aston Filofax is often referred to as plain and lacking that certain je ne sais quoi; I assure you these people don't know what they are talking about!

I honestly don't know how anyone can hold this beauty in the palm of their hand and not experience the magic.  The Aston, in my opinion, is just so classy and sexy; but in an understated, elegant sort of way... a bit like me I suppose.  Dogs look like their owners, do Filofaxes?

The price tag brought me back down to earth though - Eighty quid?  Yikes.  Better think this through. Reluctantly, I returned my soul mate to the shelf and sheepishly walked away, past the freaked out security guard and out onto the sunny street.

My love encounter wasn't about to end there though.  It was when I pulled my stubby old 80's burgundy planner out on the bus to console myself (it has always worked in the past) that I knew it was over between us.  I craved the elegance and subtle beauty of the Aston like nothing you could possibly imagine.

So I spent a whole week scanning my laptop for reviews and pictures and deals. That's when I came across a Youtube video that compared my beautiful Aston, with a Holborn zipped. Suddenly I was very, very confused.


The Holborn zipped 


I have never been a fan of the idea of a zipped Filofax.  Perhaps they remind me of those bulky zipped school pencil cases from back in the day. I was always more of a slim leather or tin pencil case kinda schoolgirl.

My opinions were challenged though when I watched greedily as an American woman ran her hands all over this Holborn zipped Filofax in a Youtube video, whilst comparing it with my beloved Aston. I couldn't figure out the feeling I was experiencing at the time, but I know now - I was jealous.




Initially, it was the colour that attracted me. Not burgundy, but a beautiful classy wine colour.  Then it was the look of the buffalo leather.  Bear in mind that I had never handled buffalo leather before, but as soon as this American lady described it as "buttery", I knew I was intrigued.

The smooth leather caught the light in the video which totally enhanced the wine colour.  I think I watched this video five or six times in a row trying to imagine what it felt like to hold it in my hands.

When the woman started to reveal all the pockets and space there was inside, I realised I had a problem. This Filofax was like a little clutch bag!  I am a woman okay?  The idea of a Filofax/clutch was too much... I had to have it! A woman can never have too many bags.  It wouldn't be like I was purchasing two Filofaxes... because obviously, that would be nuts! No, I was going to purchase an Aston Filofax planner, and a Holborn Filofax clutch bag -  This is my story and I'm sticking to it!

So that's exactly what I did. Thoughts and comments anyone?

How to create a unique dashboard for your Filofax - the Filofancy way!



How to create a unique Filofax planner dashboard


TRUST me... This is going to be the most useful thing you create for your Filofax.  Have you ever heard of such a thing as a Filofax dashboard?  



This is quite an old post, and planner dashboards are well-known now, although they have evolved a lot. But I still think this post has some unique ideas that you may enjoy ...


How to create a unique Filofax planner dashboard


If you are an active member of the online Filofax community then you probably have heard of planner dashboards because everybody is using them.

Most people tend to use the Filofax sticky-notes insert as their dashboard.  Well, as usual, I have an alternative and a rather clever way of creating a dashboard for your Filofax or other planner.

What is a Filofax planner dashboard? 


If you still have no idea what I am talking about when I mention the term "Filofax dashboard", let me explain ...

Your planner dashboard your first port of call.  You open your Filofax - and there it is - with everything you need to immediately be reminded of. (Nowadays you may recognise it as an 'inbox')

Your dashboard can be decorative, it can be functional, or it can be both.

The most important thing about a planner dashboard is that you are able to truly make it your own so that it is appealing and useful.


How to use the Filofax sticky note insert as a dashboard 


Maybe you are wondering why so many people are using the Filofax sticky notes insert as a dashboard? (Or creating their own dashboard of sticky notes.)

Well, it is because sticky notes are the easiest way to write notes down, then tear them off and dispose of when you're done! It's a great pace to jot noted that you don't want permanently in your planner.

Because they are sticky notes, you can also tear them off and then stick them elsewhere in your Filofax to remind you of things later.


What makes the Filofancy planner dashboard different? 


I have come up with a fabulous idea for a Filofax planner dashboard. It's simple, affordable, reusable, and highly personalised. What more could you want from a dashboard?

Just purchase a Filofax business card holder insert - then use a credit card for sizing, and cut up a nice little pile of pretty coloured paper to slip into each pocket (as much as each pocket will hold). 

Now you have a great little note-taking system!

Dedicate each space to specific types of notes:

  • personal reminders
  • work-related mind-joggers
  • shopping lists
  • telephone numbers
  • websites

When you have finished with the note, take it out to reveal a fresh sheet of notepaper.

You can also use your dashboard to display photos and keepsakes, such as inspirational quotes to motivate you when you open up your planner. 

The pockets are also a great place to house your planner stickers, sticky tabs, paperclips, and anything else that fits and might be useful or cute in your planner.

I use my Filofax business card for sizing which came with my Aqua Chameleon A5 when I bought it.  It's ideal because I can either keep it attached to the rings in my Filofax or slip it into the dashboard itself, ready for when I need to cut up a few more slips of notepaper.






I don't know about you but I'm not so keen on the neon-bright colours of the Filofax sticky-note insert dashboard. 

The great thing about the Filofancy dashboard is that you can choose your own paper – coloured, plain, squared, lined, or dotted.

Use your dashboard pockets to keep reminders, to-do lists, or even to slip folded up bits of paper like receipts if you need to remind yourself to file them away later for your expenses.

Store your stickers and paper-clips, like I  have below ...

What makes the Filofancy dashboard ultimately versatile is that you can modify the Flex jot-pad like I have in order to attach it to your dashboard for longer lists and notes that you may need immediate access to (see above).

I just took my Filofax sizing card and measured around it on the back cover of the flex jot-pad, and then I cut the back-cover so that it fits into the top card slot of the dashboard.






I use the underneath card slots to store my star-stickers and my little silver Waterstones bookmarks, which are very useful for marking pages in my Filofax when I don't want to forget where I have put them!




You can even make a mini index to remind you of what you have recently written and where in your Filofax you have filed your notes away. I am forever losing or forgetting things I have written down and filed somewhere in my fat Filofax, so this system is such a godsend to me.

My dashboard is now the first thing I look at when I open my Filofax.  It is my memory jogger, and it also directs me to the things in my Filofax I may otherwise have forgotten about.

You can also use the back of the dashboard in the same way because the cards insert is double-sided.
